Taking a Ride

The bike path around Petoskey is lovely this time of year, and with over 30 miles one just one trail, there is a lot to explore. You can ride along the waterfront, around the bay to Harbor Springs, or south to Charlevoix as well. Or, for the very adventurous, you can start in Charlevoix and bike to Harbor Springs, taking in all the beauty along the way!

Another of my Favorite Things...

I love turrets!! When we were choosing the design for our house, my second choice had a turret, but the layout wasn't what we wanted. I think I it was only in the running because it had a turret! This Victorian-looking home in Petoskey is one of my favorites for just this reason. Hope you enjoy it too.

A Few of My Favorite Things

This is one of my favorite houses in Petoskey. I don't know who owns it or anything, but the columns are just beautiful. It is in a nice area and you can probably see the bay out of a few windows. The bay is nearby, although you could say that about a lot of the houses in Petoskey. :)

I went to the Library last night and there in the lobby was this quilt. I know that the library hangs quilts here often, but this one really caught my eye. I looked for the artist's name or some information about it, but didn't see anything, so you'll have to be in the dark as I am right now! For now, enjoy the beauty and intricacy of the workmanship of this quilt, and try not to think how dizzying it would have been to work on it!

Welcome Downtown!

Welcome to the Downtown Area--beautified by the Petoskey Garden Club. They make sure that this and several other beds in the downtown area are nicely groomed and planted each year. In the fall, they plant several thousand tulip bulbs which bloom beautifully in the spring and are then given away in the summer, usually to a Habitat for Humanity project in the area, I have heard. I hope that it is so! It is a nice piece of community effort.

A million dollar sunset!

Here's a million dollar sunset--something Petoskey is famous for! It was gorgeous with the colorful red sun and the clouds. So pretty!

Another Petoskey Landmark...

Welcome to a great Petoskey landmark: American Spoon Foods! This is one of THE places that you have to visit when you come to Petoskey. Their kitchens are right here in Petoskey, so all these wonderful things are made right here with as much local produce as they can find. They have a wide assortment of lovely jams, jellies, and savory sauces, as well as salsas and other delectable delights. Above is a picture of the tasting table, set up so you can see which of their yummy creations you like before you buy it! I absolutely love a few things, and others are just plain great! I love their Strawberry Butter, the Marionberry Butter, and the Maple Cream, not to mention their Lime Curd. Oh, and don't forget the Cherry Peach Salsa! My hubby likes the Blueberry-Lime combination and my daughter loves the Vanilla Curd. (We shop here quite a bit.) The Cherry Poppers are a really fun way to enjoy local cherries. Anything here is a perfect Petoskey gift for friends and family at Christmas time as well!

Check out their website at: www.spoon.com

PS. They ship all over the world!

This one is at least worth 3/4 of a million!

I do love sunsets here on the bay and if you missed an earlier sunset post, Petoskey is known as the land of the million dollar sunsets. This one is really good, at least 3/4 of a million! The nights can get cool here, even in the middle of summer; it is a good idea to bring a jacket even if it's over 80 in the afternoon. Like today--it was 83 this afternoon and now it's 62 since the sun went down! Lovely Northern Michigan!

Art About Town

This is part of a revolving sculpture exhibit in town. There are a few other pieces that exchange places every few months. This one is on the grounds of the Art Center downtown. There is also a leaping stag that is here sometimes. This particular sculpture is about 12 feet tall and of a butterfly sipping daintily on a trumpet flower. It is lovely to have such whimsical and fun pieces of art around us!

Small town, lots of history.

Petoskey's history museum is located at the waterfront and overlooks the marina. It is an old train station with some of the tracks still in front of the building. I haven't been here in a few years (not the best place to take really young children) but my kids are old enough to read now and they have been asking to go and visit next week. From what I remember, there are quite a few artifacts from the time when Petoskey was a health resort favored by people from Chicago and Detroit. They would come for a few weeks to take the "cure" of fresh air and long walks along the bay. Hopefully more on this later!
