Snow

How many pictures can you take of snow and still have them be interesting? I really have no wish to find out!! I have heard that snow when it seems like Spring is coming is like a slap in the face when you expected a kiss... very appropriate, I think.

Just One More...

The sunset was so exquisite the other day, I couldn't resist just one more picture of it. If you look closely, you can see the couple walking near the sun. Lovely!

Gorgeous Sunsets

We've had some incredible evenings lately. This sunset was just gorgeous. The sun was a huge golden ball and the reflection on the ice was just beautiful. It almost looks like a summer sunset (except for the snow!)

Winter does have One Good Thing....

Sun and Clouds

The sun is really trying to peek through, but the clouds were really thick. I'm so glad that no matter how thick the clouds, it still trys!

It Snowed. Again.

Last night about 6 pm, it started to snow. It started out slow, just tiny flakes. But as the evening went on, the snow got heavier and the wind picked up considerably. By the time I got home last night at 8:30, visibility was about 200 feet and was I glad to be home for the night!! The snow stopped around 1 or 2 am and this morning when we got up, we had over 10 inches in our driveway! Schools are closed and people have been asked to stay in until more plowing can be done, probably a few hours or so. Hopefully, this is winter's last hurrah and Spring can come soon. As for me, I'm staying home today!!

Lace

It snowed again this weekend, but only about 4 more inches thankfully. 90 minutes south of Petoskey, they received about a foot! Instead of blankets of snow, we just got lace.

Shadows

Today I forgot my camera so I wanted to share this picture from last week. I love the long shadows on the ground. In the winter, these shadows come as early as 4:30 pm and in the summer as late as 9:30 or 10:00 pm. In the summer, we get 5 more hours in our "day". Winter days are short; some days it is dark when you leave for work and dark when you get home from work. I much prefer the longer days and am anticipating them even now.

Ebb and Flow

The ice on the bay is thinner than it was a few weeks ago, but it hasn't thawed yet. It looks like the top layer had thawed just a bit, then was water was pushed by the wind to make those interesting patterns. Happy Friday!

It's Melting, Melting....

It has been unseasonably warm the last few days and because of this, the snow has melted considerably. Instead of over a foot covering the ground, that is mostly all gone and all that is left is the piles of snow. And it is warm! (Well, warm for us in February. It got up to 40 today!) But it will not stay. It is supposed to snow again in a few days, so I'm enjoying the balmy weather!

Oh, the Sunset

I wish the picture could do it justice but it just can't. It was amazing. You'll just have to imagine it more spectacular and bright than this.

Completely Frozen

The temperatures have been well below freezing for a few weeks now, so the bay is completely frozen. In fact, the first ice fishing shanty is up on the ice. It is in the picture--that tiny dot on the right hand side out in the middle of the ice. Not a speck on the camera, but an ice shanty. Not my idea of fun, but there are those who think this is the best time of the year.

Winter Sunset

It was getting dark last night, just before 6 pm, but the sunset was so lovely, I had to share it with you today.

Almost Frozen

I took this picture a few days ago. It shows a little bit of open water yet, which has now since closed. I tried to take a picture yesterday, but as my camera's battery was low, I couldn't. So, you'll have to check again soon to see it totally frozen!

The Icing on the...Bay

I took a picture a few days ago of the bay with mini icebergs floating in the water. Those icebergs have merged and frozen together to form a solid sheet. The whole bay hasn't frozen yet, but the temperatures are supposed to be a high of 10F today and that's the highest it is supposed to get until this weekend. Brrrr. Which in turn means that the bay will most likely freeze all the way across by the end of the week. (FYI--it is 7 miles across the bay to Harbor Springs on the other side!)

A Time for Every Season

And this season just happens to be winter. Yes, the clock is correct, it is 2:45 in the afternoon. It just doesn't get the bright here unless the sun is shining! Many days here in the winter are gray and cold, but the knowledge that spring and green things are coming in a few months makes even this cold gray day bearable.

The Bay in Winter

Along about January or February, the bay starts to look like this; miniature icebergs that eventually join if the weather is cold enough for a long period of time. A cold snap will insure this happening, and that cold snap is likely on its way. The wind also plays a vital role in this production as it pushes water up onto the breakwall and the lighthouse and makes very interesting snow sculptures for our enjoyment. But for now, the temperatures are winter-comfortable (mid 20's) and there is no snow expected today.

Outdoor Fun

One of our favorite outdoor activities in the early winter is sledding with the four-wheeler. You can't have too much snow for this or the four-wheeler will get stuck, so there is usually a small window of time before the snow gets deep. But it is fun, and there is usually a lot of "Woohoo"s to be heard!

Series on the Sun

I know I've posted a lot of photos of the sun lately, but snow pictures get tiring after a while! This was the afternoon sun today with some interesting clouds as well. I enjoy seeing the sun, hope you do too! (And will someone, somewhere enjoy some warm weather for me? Thanks!)
